Contract Information

Our teachers are contracted on 3-5 month terms, which take place in the fall and spring. The length of the term depends on several factors, largest of which is the type of class being taught. Classes come in two general types: Extra-Curricular Courses and Accredited Courses. Both take place at prestigious universities, and differ in their curriculum and student bodies. While teachers cannot control which contract we offer, we do accept requests and suggestions. Decisions regarding contracts and courses will be determined based on the applicant’s prior experience, skillset, and request.

Contracts are renewable. During the contracted term, teachers will be quite busy during the weekdays but will (with minor exception) have their weekends fully to themselves.

All universities are in the greater Tokyo area, including Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, and Aichi. While teachers cannot control their placement, they can make requests and give suggestions.

In between contracted terms, teachers have time to travel or return home. The length of these off-times depend on the contract terms given to the teachers. Teachers are not salaried between terms. The terms are scheduled as such:

Spring Term

  • Extra-Curricular Courses: Late April/early May to late July (approx. 3 months)
  • Accredited Courses: Late March/early April to late July (approx. 3-5 months)

Fall Term

  • Extra-Curricular Courses: Mid/late September to late December (approx. 3 months)
  • Accredited Courses: Early/mid September to late December/late January (approx. 3-5 months)

Salary and Benefits

Our teachers earn between 260,000 – 275,000 yen per month, which amounts to approximately 2,430 – 2,550 USD, converted (note: conversions may change with time).

The offered salary is based on the teacher’s previous teaching and academic experience and education. Additionally, teachers have the choice to be provided with Westgate housing. We can arrange a furnished single apartment with a rental fee of 81,000 yen per month. This cost includes all fees – utilities, rent, and furnishings.

Additionally, teachers are provided with smart phones during the contract, as well as transportation costs.

We offer flight reimbursement to and from Tokyo up to 1,200 USD. Teachers choose where they wish to fly from and to. These locations don’t have to be one country; teachers may fly from one country to Japan, and fly out to another.

Our goal at Westgate is to ensure that our teachers have everything taken care of, as to allow them to focus on teaching to the best of their ability, and to focus on educating a new generation of English speakers in Japan.

Message from President

Westgate Corporation began in 1983 as a company dedicated to English education reform in Japan. Our goal hasn’t changed. We still strive to produce fluent English speakers for a global society.

There is a real need for teachers passionate about transforming students into proactive scholars and critical thinkers. That’s something the Japanese education system – whether it’s elementary school or university – doesn’t always bring into focus. We aim to broaden students’ cross-cultural awareness and international perspective while sharpening their English skills. To that end, we provide a wide array of educational programs for students, many at the university level. But language education is not enough: we need to cultivate active young minds and turn them into global leaders. That cultivation is exactly what we think our Westgate teachers deliver.

Westgate – as our name suggests – is a gateway not only for students, but for instructors. We have provided thousands of instructors with successful entry into the competitive world of university education. Peerless training and staff support foster the nurturing environment that instructors need to realize their full creative teaching potential, all while enjoying the enviable cultural experience that Japan has to offer.

The success of our English programs would not be possible without excellent instructors. Westgate offers a serious milestone in career development in exchange for the dedication of any highly motivated teaching professional eager to flourish in a global teachers’ institution. I invite you to join us.
